As tributes continue to pour in for former Alaskan Bush People star Matt Brown, a surprising detail has emerged from the official records surrounding his death. While members of Matt’s family have publicly stated that they believe he may have taken his own life, THE OKANOGAN COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER HAS NOT OFFICIALLY REACHED THAT CONCLUSION. In fact, according to official statements released by authorities, the investigation into Matt’s death was still ongoing, and an autopsy had yet to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The distinction may seem small, but it has attracted significant public attention. In the days following the discovery of Matt’s body, many headlines focused on comments made by family members, particularly Bear Brown, who said the family believed Matt had ended his own life. As a result, many members of the public assumed the case had already been officially resolved. However, the actual wording released by authorities tells a different story.
According to a statement issued by the Okanogan County Medical Examiner’s Office on June 1, officials confirmed that an adult male recovered from the Okanogan River south of Oroville, Washington, had been positively identified as MATTHEW J. BROWN, AGE 43. The statement explained that the Medical Examiner’s Office had first been notified on May 27 after the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office reported “AN INDIVIDUAL OBSERVED FLOATING FACE-DOWN IN THE RIVER.”
The document further noted that initial attempts to locate the missing individual were unsuccessful because of the dangerous river conditions. Strong currents and hazardous water levels reportedly prevented search teams from immediately recovering the victim. Search efforts continued for several days as authorities and volunteers combed the area looking for answers.
Three days later, officials received notification that a body had been discovered downstream from the original location where the individual had last been seen. Working together with the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, investigators recovered the remains and began the identification process.
One detail in the official statement has received particular attention.
Authorities confirmed that IDENTIFICATION WAS ASSISTED BY A FAMILY MEMBER PRESENT AT THE SCENE.
That family member was later revealed to be Noah Brown, Matt’s brother. Noah has publicly described the painful experience of helping identify his brother after the body was recovered from the river. According to Noah, he personally confirmed Matt’s identity, allowing officials to move forward with the investigation.
In a subsequent interview, Noah explained that the family was still waiting for critical answers from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
“RIGHT NOW THE BODY IS IN THE POSSESSION OF THE CORONER,” Noah said. “AND WHEN WE GET WORD FROM THE CORONER … MAYBE MONDAY OR TUESDAY … THEN WE’LL KNOW MORE DETAILS AND HAVE NEXT STEPS TO TAKE.”
He added that the family was still struggling to process the reality of Matt’s death.
“RIGHT NOW WE’RE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF ACCEPTING THE FACT THAT HE’S GONE.”
Those comments reveal an important reality often overlooked amid the emotional headlines. At the time the family was speaking publicly, they themselves were still awaiting official findings from forensic investigators. While loved ones may have had personal beliefs about what happened, THE MEDICAL EXAMINER HAD NOT YET ISSUED A FINAL DETERMINATION.
The official statement made this clear by announcing that AN AUTOPSY WOULD BE CONDUCTED IN THE COMING DAYS TO ESTABLISH THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF DEATH.
For many observers, that detail came as a surprise.
The public discussion surrounding Matt’s death had already begun moving toward conclusions. Yet the official documents showed that investigators were still gathering evidence, reviewing findings, and waiting for forensic results before making any final ruling.
As a result, one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the case may be the belief that authorities have already officially declared what happened.
They have not.
At least according to the Medical Examiner’s public statement, the investigation remained active, and the final determination depended upon the results of the autopsy and forensic examination. Until those findings are released, questions surrounding the exact circumstances of Matt Brown’s death remain matters for investigators rather than settled fact.
For now, while family members continue grieving and sharing their memories of Matt, the official record tells a more cautious story: THE INVESTIGATION IS NOT YET COMPLETE, AND THE FINAL ANSWERS MAY STILL BE AHEAD.
